JUST IN: Second Republic Senate President Joseph Wayas dies in London hospital

A former Senate President in the Second Republic, Joseph Wayas, has been reported dead.

Although the cause of his demise was not disclosed as of the time of filing this report, family sources said that the senator passed away in a London hospital early Thursday morning.

A multilinguist, the former politician was trained in the United States and United Kingdom.

The 26-year-old Wayas returned to Nigeria after his doctorate degree in 1973 and was appointed a commissioner at the airport by the military governor of South-Eastern State (now defunct), late Brigadier Jacob Esuene

In 1977, he was elected into the Constituent Assembly.

Two years later, Wayas, now one of the biggest financiers of the then National Party of Nigeria, was elected President of the Nigerian Senate.

He was still in active service before the democratically government of Alhaji Shehu Shagari government was truncated and overthrown by Major General Muhammed Buhari in 1983.

Wayas last major appearance on the political scene was in 2010 when he was honoured with the rank of Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger by former President Goodluck Jonathan.
