The Federal High Court in Kuje, Abuja, has adjourned the trial of the former Executive Secretary of the National Health Insurance Scheme, Usman Yusuf, to February 12.

Yusuf was arraigned before Justice Chinyere Nwecheonwu of the Federal Capital Territory High Court in Kuje, Abuja, on Monday for the second time since the EFCC arrested him on January 29.

The ex-NHIS boss had appeared in court on January 30 and his trial was deferred to February 3.

His allegations are bordering on inflating the agency’s ICT budget and fraud.

Yusuf was also accused of abusing office, using his position for personal gain, approving contracts without due process and awarding contracts to firms that lacked the competence to execute projects between 2016 and 2017.

The former NHIS boss denied the allegations when his charges were read to him and pleaded not guilty.

His legal counsel, O.I Habeeb, made a bail application and pleaded with the judge to remand him in the custody of EFCC until the hearing of the bail application

The presiding judge, however, denied his legal counsel’s request, noting that he ceased to be in the custody of EFCC once arraigned.

The judge also ordered his remand to the Kuje Correctional Centre, Abuja.
