Former Kano State governor Ibrahim Shekarau has officially left the Peoples Democratic Party to join the All Progressives Congress.

The move comes after several weeks of consultations with his political associates.

Shekarau made the announcement on Sunday at his residence in Kano, in the presence of supporters and loyalists, alongside PDP chieftain Bello Gwarzo.

Speaking at the gathering, the former governor explained that the decision followed a thorough assessment of available political options.

He sought the opinion of those in attendance, asking whether they supported the move, and received unanimous approval, signalling a collective endorsement of the defection.

Shekarau served as governor of Kano State from 2003 to 2011.

He also held office as Minister of Education between 2014 and 2015.

Meanwhile, Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has welcomed Shekarau into the APC.

In a statement issued on Sunday by his Chief Press Secretary, Mustapha Muhammad, the governor described the development as a significant boost to the party’s influence in the state.

He added that a date would soon be announced, in consultation with the party’s national secretariat, for the formal reception of the former governor into the APC.

According to him, the party continues to gain momentum in Kano, strengthening its position as a dominant political force.

The governor further stated that the APC remains prepared to secure victories in all elective positions in upcoming elections, citing unity and strategic alliances as key drivers of its confidence.
