India has been thrown into a state of mourning after its former Prime Minister, Manmohan Sing, passed away at the age of 92 after battling an illness.
Singh, a celebrated economist and politician, is widely credited with transforming India into a global economic powerhouse during his tenure as the country’s leader.
The All India Institute of Medical Sciences confirmed that Singh was admitted to the hospital in New Delhi after losing consciousness at his residence on Thursday.
Despite efforts to revive him, he was declared dead shortly after.
Manmohan Singh served as India’s Prime Minister from 2004 to 2014. His tenure is remembered for steering the country through a period of remarkable economic growth, particularly during his first term.
His economic reforms and liberalisation policies laid the foundation for India’s emergence as one of the world’s leading economies.
However, his second term saw a slowdown in economic growth, which somewhat overshadowed his earlier achievements. Despite this, Singh’s contributions to India’s economic transformation remain unparalleled.
Current Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences, describing Singh as “one of India’s most esteemed leaders.”
Writing on X, Modi said, “As our Prime Minister, he made extensive efforts to improve people’s lives. India grieves the loss of a visionary leader.”
Opposition leader Rahul Gandhi called Singh a mentor and guide, praising his leadership with “immense wisdom and integrity.” “Millions of us who admired him will remember him with the utmost pride,” Gandhi stated.
Mallikarjun Kharge, leader of the opposition in the upper house of parliament, described Singh as a “visionary statesman, a leader of unimpeachable integrity, and an economist of unparalleled stature.”
President Droupadi Murmu also paid tribute, stating on X that Singh would “always be remembered for his service to the nation, his unblemished political life, and his utmost humility.”
