Ex-Grammys chief Neil Portnow accused of rape, drugging victims

Published

A musician has filed a lawsuit against Neil Portnow, the former head of the Recording Academy, accusing him of drugging and raping her in 2018.

The lawsuit, filed in Manhattan Supreme Court, alleges that Portnow invited the woman to his hotel room after a Grammy-related event in New York and offered her wine. After drinking the wine, the woman began to feel woozy, and Portnow, who did not drink, allegedly raped her.

The woman reported the incident to Academy officials several months later, but her account was reportedly ignored. She also filed a police report against Portnow, but law enforcement authorities declined to prosecute.

The lawsuit also accuses the Recording Academy of negligence, alleging that the organization failed to properly investigate the woman’s allegations.

Portnow has denied the allegations, calling them “without merit.” The Recording Academy has also vowed to “vigorously defend” itself in the lawsuit.

The lawsuit is the latest in a series of recent scandals that have rocked the Recording Academy. In 2019, Portnow stepped down as head of the organization after making disparaging comments about women in the music industry.

In 2020, Portnow’s replacement, Deborah Dugan, was suspended after filing a discrimination complaint against the Academy. In her complaint, Dugan alleged that she was subjected to sexual harassment and other forms of discrimination.
