Former Governor of Benue State, Samuel Ortom, has cancelled his 64th birthday celebration to show sympathy for families affected by recent attacks in the state.
Ortom turned 64 on Wednesday, April 23, 2025, but said there would be no parties or celebrations due to the ongoing violence in Benue.
In a statement signed by his media aide, Terver Akase, Ortom said the decision was made because of the continued killings of innocent people across local government areas in the state.
“In light of the ongoing intensified invasion, attacks, and senseless killings of innocent Benue people by Fulani terrorists across various local government areas, I have decided not to hold any celebration or festivities,” the statement read.
He said he was deeply saddened by the loss of lives and would rather stand in prayer and support with the victims and their families.
Ortom also used the opportunity to thank God for his life and the support he has received from the people of Benue and Nigerians across the country.
“I remain grateful to God Almighty for His mercy, good health, and blessings over the past 64 years, and I reaffirm my commitment to the service of God and humanity in the years ahead,” he said.
The former governor called on Nigerians to keep praying for peace in the country and especially for the people of Benue State.
He asked the public to also pray for national leaders so they can overcome Nigeria’s security problems.
In his words, “Please pray for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Benue State Governor Hyacinth Alia, and Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume. May God grant them wisdom and strength to tackle the nation’s security challenges.”
Ortom said only God could bring lasting peace to the land and urged citizens not to lose hope.
