The family of Chief Dubem Onyia, a former Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, has announced his death at the age of 73.
In a statement on Tuesday, Emeka Onyia, speaking on behalf of the family, confirmed that the former minister passed away on Monday, March 10, 2025, after a brief illness, surrounded by his loved ones.
“It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Hon. Chief Dubem Onyia, a distinguished statesman and former Honourable Minister of State for Foreign Affairs. He passed away today, 10th March 2025, following a brief spell of illness – surrounded by his family and loved ones,” Emeka said.
Dubem Onyia played a key role in shaping Nigeria’s diplomatic affairs during his time in office. He was known for his strong dedication to the country’s interests and his integrity.
“Chief Onyia dedicated his life to God and public service, leaving an indelible mark on Nigeria’s diplomatic landscape at home and overseas. His tenure as Minister of State for Foreign Affairs was marked by his unwavering commitment to national interest, which remains his legacy,” Emeka added.
Described as a devoted husband, father, and mentor, Onyia’s impact went beyond government service, touching many lives through his generosity and wisdom.
“He was a devoted husband, father, brother, a trailblazer, respected leader, a mentor to many, and a man of great integrity. His contributions extended beyond government service, touching the lives of many through his wisdom, generosity, and dedication to improving lives,” the family stated.
Onyia is survived by his wife, children, grandchildren, siblings, relatives, political allies, and friends.
The family said details of his funeral arrangements would be announced soon.
