Reports just coming in inform that former FIFA president Joao Havelange died moments ago at a hospital in Brazil.
According to AFP, Havelange died aged 100.
The Samaritano Hospital in Rio de Janeiro said he died early Tuesday, while Rio was hosting the Olympic Games.
The cause of his death is still sketchy as at the time of putting this report together.
Incidentally, Brazilian soccer club Santos FC also confirm ex-president Luis Alvaro de Oliveira Ribeiro has died at age 73.
Havelange had a heart pacemaker implanted in 2006. He was hospitalized for more than two months, including several weeks in intensive care, in 2012 because of an infection in his right ankle.
Havelange was a lawyer, businessman, and former athlete who served as the 7th President of FIFA, from 1974 to 1998.
His tenure as President is the second longest in FIFA’s history, behind only that of Jules Rimet.
The late Havelange received the title of Honorary President when leaving office but resigned in April 2013.
