Former senator representing Abia Central Senatorial District, Nkechi Nwaogu, has resigned from the All Progressives Congress.

According to The Punch, Nwaogu confirmed her exit from the ruling party during a telephone interview on Thursday, citing alleged injustice within the APC as the reason for her decision.

“I can confirm that I have left the party,” she said.

Nwaogu, who also represented Osisioma Ngwa, Obingwa, and Ugwunagbo Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, reportedly left the party following the outcome of the APC primary election in which Emeka Atuma emerged victorious.

Speaking on the development, the former senator alleged that no proper election was conducted in her zone.

“In my zone, there was no election. I know I have an advantage in my zone. When I saw the shenanigans of them trying to destroy the party we built, I knew they are losing touch,” she stated.

She also accused some party members of abandoning the truth and working against the interests of the party.

There had been speculation in recent weeks that Nwaogu was in talks with the NDC, while leaders of the APC were reportedly making efforts to persuade her to remain in the party.

Meanwhile, the Abia State chapter of the APC said it had yet to receive any formal notification regarding her resignation.

The state Publicity Secretary of the party, Uche Aguoru, said the party was unaware of her departure.

“If she has left the party, I have no knowledge. We are yet to get any letter to that effect,” Aguoru said.

The development comes amid ongoing debates surrounding recent political defections ahead of the 2027 general elections.
