The Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, has advised Nigerians to acquire basic combat skills for self-defence and survival.
Musa gave the advice on Thursday during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today. He said learning combat techniques should be treated like learning to drive or swim.
“That one should be taken as learning driving, learning how to swim. Whether we have war or not, it is a survival instinct,” Musa said. “In Europe, swimming is compulsory. Learning and teaching about security is compulsory because you have to learn what security is.”
He explained that the rising security threats across the country make it important for citizens to be more proactive about their safety.
“Security is everybody’s business,” the defence chief said, urging Nigerians to stay alert and watchful of their surroundings to identify strange or suspicious faces.
Musa noted that self-defence skills could save lives during emergencies and encouraged the integration of basic combat and security training into schools and community programmes.
