Switzerland are through to the quarter-finals of the EURO 2020 by eliminating world champions, France after Paris Saint Germain’s Kylian Mbappe failed to beat Yann Sommer with a poorly taken penalty kick.

Haris Seferović gave Vladimir Petkovic’s team the lead in the 15th minute while Ricardo Rodríguez missed a penalty in the 55th minute.

The spot-kick loss reawakened France which turned the game around through Real Madrid forward, Karim Benzema’s brace in the space of two minutes (57′, 59′) to hand Didier Deschamp’s team a deserved lead.

Manchester United’s Paul Pogba thought he had put the game beyond the Swiss when he scored a screamer in the 75th minute but the Rossocrociati (Red Crosses) showed incredible courage as Seferović pulled one back nine minutes to the end of the second half before Mario Gavranović scored the equaliser in the 90th minute to force France to extra-time.

The Swiss stood their ground and held on by keeping the scoreline at 3-3 throughout the extra time, thereby forcing the game to be decided via penalty shootouts.

Hugo Lloris who denied Rodrigues earlier failed to save a single shot with Switzerland scoring all five.

To further compound the frustrations of the night, France’s fifth kick by Mbappe was saved by Sommer.

Switzerland progressed into the quarter-finals of the European Championship for the first time in their history and would face Spain who defeated Croatia 5-3 in a dramatic encounter earlier on Monday.
