Italy began their European Championship in style by securing a confident 3-0 victory over Turkey at the Stadio Olimpico Stadium in Rome on Friday night.

The Italians were ruthless throughout the game, making 24 attempts at goal and eight shots on target as they reduced the Turks to just three attempts with no single shot on target.

Lorenzo Insigne, Ciro Immobile and Domenico Berardi led the attacking line for The Azzurri with the trio having a hand directly and indirectly in all three goals on the night.

Roberto Mancini’s men were frustrated throughout the first half as they failed to break the defence of the Turks despite their dominance and attempts, including a penalty call by the Italians.

The Blues were not going to be denied in the second half as they got their much-anticipated opener through an unlikely source in the 53rd minute.

Striker, Berardi fired a low cross into the centre but the ball battered the chest of an opposing defender, Merih Demiral, who watched helplessly as the ball rolled into the net.

Mancini’s men were unstoppable from then on as Lazio striker, Immobile, doubled the lead from six yards in the 66th minute before Napoli’s Insigne the wrapped up the 3-0 scoreline with a sweet curler in the 79th minute.

The win, the first time Italy scored three goals in the competition’s history, has now taken the to 28 matches unbeaten.

Wales and Switzerland will do battle tomorrow afternoon for the next Group A game at the Baku Olympic Stadium in Azerbaijan.
