The Nigerian Army has sounded a note of warning to some Nigerians guilty of compromising the territorial integrity of the country through the declaration of ethnic sovereignty.
This comes as rumours of Nigeria’s breakup intensified amidst the rising case of insecurity in the state, owing to unchecked activities of kidnappers, bandits, terrorists.
The unchecked activities of AK-47 wielding Fulani herdsmen have led to the call for their eviction in the South-West by self-styled Yoruba activist, Sunday Adeyemo fondly called Sunday Igboho – who has lately called for ethnic sovereignty by declaring the Yoruba Nation.
While his declaration doesn’t represent the South-West government, his statement was met by retaliation from the Arewa Youth Assembly who gave a 72-hour ultimatum for the eviction of Yoruba (including law-abiding Yoruba) people from the North.
Recall that this would not be the first attempt at ethnic sovereignty as the Indigenous People of Biafra has reignited its attempt for secession from Nigeria to an independent Biafran state, coming after a failed attempt that led to the civil war on 6 July, 1967 – 15 January, 1970.
However, the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt. -Gen. Ibrahim Attahiru on Monday vowed that the Nigerian army will deal decisively with every form of security threats confronting the nation.
Speaking in Uyo at the first Commanding Officers’ Workshop 2021 with the theme, ‘Repositioning the Nigerian Army to Defeat Contemporary Adversaries in a Joint Environment,’ Attahiru said:
“The Nigerian army under my leadership would remain proactive and jointly work with other security agencies to decisively deal with threats facing the nation.
“The Nigerian army under my watch remains resolute and is poised more than ever before to decisively deal with individuals or groups that threaten the peace, security and stability of our great nation,” he said. (The Independent)
