EPL: Lingard beats Iheanacho, others to Player of the Month Award
West Ham United attacker, Jesse Lingard, has dethroned Nigeria and Leicester City forward, Kelechi Iheanacho, as the Premier League’s Player of the Month for April.
Iheanacho was gunning for his second consecutive monthly award after winning it in March but the Manchester United loanee’s stunning performance was enough to beat the Nigerian at the third attempt after also being short-listed in February and March.
Lingard scored twice in a 3-2 victory over Leicester City and was on target again in a loss by the same scoreline at Newcastle United.
The 28-year-old wins the honour for the first time and is the first West Ham player to claim the accolade since Michail Antonio in July 2020.
Lingard topped an eight-man shortlist that also included Trent Alexander-Arnold, Stuart Dallas, Mason Greenwood, Kelechi Iheanacho, Matheus Pereira, Allan Saint-Maximin and Chris Wood.
Reacting after receiving the award, Lingard told Premier League’s website: “I’ve been nominated for the past two months and even getting nominated is a great feeling for me.
“I want to be up there as the best I can be and the best in the world. [David Moyes] has shown faith and given me the freedom in each game to go and perform.”
Optajoe reports that Lingard has participated in 63 individual months of league football in his career, with April 2021 the fourth time he’s netted as many as four goals: 4 – September 2013 5 – December 2017 4 – December 2018 4 – April 2021.
