EPL: Cavani rescues Man Utd from Newcastle defeat

Published

Uruguayan striker, Edinson Cavani, spared Manchester United’s blushes during Monday night’s 1-1 draw against Newcastle United.

The hosts who were looking for a way out of the relegation zone got off to a good start by taking an early lead against their struggling visitors.

A slip from returning Red Devils defender, Raphael Varane, gave The Magpies a quick break, allowing Allan Saint-Maximin slot in the opener in the 7th minute.

St James’ Park roared against the Red Devils who appeared to have lost their composure as they struggled to get back into the game.

United had David de Gea to thank in the second half when he denied Saint-Maximin the chance to double Newcastle’s lead.

However, United found the back of the net after over an hour when Cavani squeezed in the equaliser in the 71st minute.

The Magpies kept up the fire in search of a winner, however, Jacob Murphy struck the post before Miguel Almiron was denied by a brilliant effort from De Gea.

Seventh-placed United missed the chance to go fifth on the EPL table by dropping two vital points while Howe’s men claimed a vital point but remain 19th on the log.
