The Enugu State Police Command has apprehended three men suspected of vandalising high-voltage power cables in Aninri Local Government Area.

The command disclosed the arrests in a statement issued on Friday by the state Police Public Relations Officer, SP Daniel Ndukwe.

The suspects were identified as Chukwu Kelvin (25), Kenechukwu Ude (25), and Uche Nwankwo (28). Ndukwe said they were intercepted by the command’s Distress Response Squad during a routine stop-and-search along the Enugu/Port-Harcourt Expressway on October 20, 2025, at approximately 4:48 am.

The police reported that the suspects were transporting lengths of vandalised aluminium cables hidden under cassava leaves in a white minibus with registration number ENU 450 XK.

In addition, officers recovered one large cable cutter, two pairs of rubber gloves, and a bag containing clothes.

Ndukwe added that the suspects confessed to vandalising the cables from electric poles along Ukete Road in Oduma community and were on their way to sell them at the New Artisan Market in Enugu.

The state Commissioner of Police, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa, reiterated the command’s commitment to “fishing out vandals and other criminals bent on destroying and denying citizens the enjoyment of essential social amenities.”

The suspects will be arraigned in court upon the conclusion of investigations.
