Women from Awgu Local Government Area in Enugu State, under the Umuada Awgu Global Association, have placed a N1 million bounty on Mrs Adachukwu Okafor, an Anambra woman accused of brutally assaulting her 11-year-old house help.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria, the group also issued a 48-hour ultimatum for Okafor to surrender to the police.
Chinemerem Anyi, Founder and President of UAGA, announced the financial reward during a news briefing in Enugu, urging anyone with information on Okafor’s whereabouts to come forward.
Anyi expressed concern over the delay in Okafor’s arrest, stating, “It beats our imagination that almost three weeks after the woman perpetrated the evil act, the police were still saying that she is still at large.”
The group questioned the handling of the matter by the Anambra Police Command and issued a 48-hour ultimatum for Okafor’s apprehension.
She warned against taking the women’s calm disposition as a sign of weakness, saying, “We are heartbroken over the barbaric act, and today, we gathered for this important press briefing over the recent brutalization of our daughter, Miss Happiness Nwafor, by her wicked madam.”
UAGA urged the police and Anambra Government to expedite efforts in capturing Okafor. Anyi emphasized, “Our searchlight is on you, and we will not rest until justice is served on this matter.”
The group also called on mothers to be cautious about giving their underage children as house helps and encouraged them to bear the number of children they can care for.
In a related development, the Federal Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development announced a N2 million reward for information leading to Okafor’s arrest.
Okafor is wanted for allegedly inserting a hot knife into the minor’s private parts and burning her face and buttocks with a hot electric iron.
The Anambra Police Command has declared her wanted as she remains at large.
