The Enugu Electricity Distribution Company has raised concerns over the vandalism of its electricity installations in Abakaliki, Ebonyi State, leading to a widespread power outage.

In a statement on Sunday, the company’s Head of Corporate Communications, Emeka Ezeh, explained that the loss of power was caused by the vandalisation of the Udemezue 11KV Feeder in the early hours of January 5.

“We wish to inform our esteemed customers in the Abakaliki metropolis that the current loss of power supply being experienced is due to the vandalisation of the Udemezue 11KV Feeder,” Ezeh said.

He revealed that EEDC officials discovered the act during routine patrols after noticing an unusual outage on the feeder at 2:40 a.m. The vandals had stolen approximately 16 metres of underground armoured cable, disrupting power supply to over 70 public and private transformers.

Areas affected include Oroko-onuoha, Udensi, Kpirikpiri, Ogbaga Road, New Layout, Udemezue, Low-Cost Housing Estate, and Hilltop Road. Notable establishments like Siren Hotel, Man City Hotel, Muchels Hotel, De Pablo Hotel, and Unity FM radio station were also impacted.

Ezeh described the incident as unprecedented and expressed regret for the inconvenience caused.

“We sincerely regret this unprecedented development and appeal to our customers for their patience and understanding as we work to replace the stolen and damaged items,” he said.

He assured the public that efforts were ongoing to repair the feeder and restore power to affected areas as soon as possible.

“EEDC remains committed to delivering improved services to her esteemed customers. The company is working diligently to resolve the issue and restore power supply,” Ezeh added.

The company has called on residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities around power installations to curb further vandalism.
