Charles, Prince of Wales and heir apparent to the British throne as the eldest son of Queen Elizabeth II is celebrating his 73rd birthday today, November 14th.

Prince Charles is photographed sitting on a bench in Highgrove smiling at the camera against the backdrop of verdant gardens at his home in the summer in Gloucestershire.

He is wearing a blue pinstripe suit, light blue tie and dotted pocket square, while a purple flower adorns his lapel.

Metro UK reports that Prince Charles will spend his birthday attending the annual Remembrance Day Service at the Cenotaph.

He will lay a wreath on the top step of the Cenotaph on behalf of the Queen, who has just pulled out of the ceremony honouring Britain’s war dead after spraining her back.

This is as the 95-year-old monarch has missed several other events after being ordered to rest by royal doctors just over three weeks ago.

However, Buckingham Palace confirmed that the monarch will attend the annual ceremony, saying in a statement: "The Queen will attend the annual Remembrance Day Service at the Cenotaph on Sunday 14th November. As in previous years, Her Majesty will view the Service from the balcony of the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office building.

"Mindful of her doctors' recent advice, The Queen has decided not to attend the General Synod Service and Opening Session on Tuesday 16th November. The Earl of Wessex will attend as planned."
