Tech billionaire, Mark Zuckerberg has officially changed the name of his company from the world-renowned Facebook to Meta.
Zuckerberg announced the company's new name at its Facebook Connect event on Thursday, just as he outlined the vision for a ‘metaverse’ - the company's virtual world project.
According to UK Sun, applications such as Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, Oculus and more will retain their names, the new moniker is a catch-all for Facebook's entire operation, ie, Meta is now the official company name.
Zuckerberg said that Meta comes from the Greek word for "beyond", and better represents the company now.
“We are a company that builds technology to connect people,” the Harvard drop-out said, announcing the company’s new name.
“Facebook was born at a specific time, a college campus, the web.
“Increasingly it just doesn’t encompass everything we do.
“Right now our brand is so tightly linked to one product that it can’t possibly represent everything we’re doing today, let alone in the future.”
WuzupNigeria reported that Zuckerberg announced that Facebook will employ 10,000 people over the next five years to create Metaverse - an online world where people can use different devices to move and communicate in a virtual environment.
Zuckerberg's obsession with the dystopia which he has been talking about since July 2021 was fanned by a three-decade-old novel that has also been referenced by other tech firms such as Microsoft.
