Barnsley manager, Conor Hourihane, has confirmed that Nigerian international, Kelechi Nwakali, will be leaving the League One club before the end of the summer transfer window, following disciplinary issues related to his late return from holiday.

The 26-year-old midfielder, who resumed late from Nigeria, was excluded from first-team training and has not featured in Barnsley’s recent matches against Plymouth Argyle, Burton Albion, Fleetwood Town, and Bolton Wanderers.

Nwakali’s situation echoes a previous incident during his time with Spanish side Huesca, where he was dismissed under similar circumstances for disciplinary breaches.

Speaking ahead of Barnsley’s fixture against Peterborough United, Hourihane admitted that the club is actively working on a departure for the player.

“Obviously there’s a couple of weeks to go in the window. Let’s see where it takes us,” the manager said.

When asked directly if the Nigerian midfielder would be allowed to leave, Hourihane stated, “Yes, that’s the plan.”

Nwakali, who has two years left on his contract, made 26 appearances in all competitions last season.
