EndSARS: Sowore slams Nigerian Army for warning subversive elements
Sahara Reporters publisher, Omoyele Sowore has slammed the Nigerian Army for issuing a warning to subversive elements threatening the country’s democracy.
The Nigerian Army Headquarters through Colonel Sagir Musa issued a statement on Thursday in which it promised to support authorities in maintaining law and order in the country.
This is amid a series of EndSARS protests calling for an end to police brutality in Nigeria.
The Force maintained that that it is committed to defending the country and her democracy at all cost
The statement reads:
“The Nigerian Army (NA) wishes to reassure law abiding citizens that it is highly committed to the sustenance of peace, security and defence of democracy in Nigeria. As a responsible and law abiding organisation, the NA reaffirms its unalloyed loyalty and commitment to the President, Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria President Muhammadu Buhari and the Constitution of the Country.
“The NA hereby warns all subversive elements and trouble makers to desist from such acts as it remains highly committed to defend the country and her democracy at all cost. The NA is ready to fully support the civil authority in whatever capacity to maintain law and order and deal with any situation decisively. All officers and men are directed never to be distracted by anti democratic forces and agents of disunity.”
Reacting to the statement, Sowore described it as “highly irresponsible, inappropriate and provocative.”
The convener of the Revolution Now protest who is also part of the EndSARS protests took to Twitter to vent his displeasure.
He wrote:
“Nigerian Army has no business supporting despots, this statement is highly irresponsible, inappropriate and provocative. The Army should be loyal to its employer-the Nigerian people! Stop using the @HQNigerianArmy to intimidate Nigerians, it won’t work!”
