#EndSARS: Idris Elba calls on AU, World leaders to intervene in Lagos crisis
British actor, Idris Elba has called on the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), African Union as well as all African leaders to intervene in the ongoing crisis in Lagos, as well as other parts of Nigeria.
The 48-year-old star lent his voice to the situation via an Instagram video posted on his official Instagram page on Wednesday.
Elba described the ongoing crisis which spiralled from peaceful #EndSARS protests against police brutality as an atrocity.
He also called on the world leaders to use their power to reach and influence the Nigerian Government
“Just drawing attention to whar’s happening in Lagos right now, what’s happening is an atrocity, a murder. and I’m calling to the leaders of the ECOWAS countries, to African Union, to all African leadership to say something to the Nigerian government. You have the power and the reach. and you should do something, you should say something. People should not be persecuted for protesting and basically murdered. So I’m calling on the leaders… the other African leaders to say something to the leadership of Nigeria… We have to show them that we care about what’s going on. Please do something, say something.”
He added, “Calling on Africans to unite in protest against what is happening on Nigerian soil. The leadership of other African nations need to make their voices heard for the protesters of SARS. From one leader to another, show them some perspective on the way they are handling the youth, IT IS WRONG and should be met with HEAVY criticism and positioning. AFRICA should not turn its back on this situation, the WORLD LEADERSHIP should not turn its back on this situation. Use your power and reach to influence the Nigerian government to govern this situation better and not spill blood.”
