EndSARS: Family of murdered Rivers taxi driver demands N100m
Following the alleged killing of 31-year-old taxi driver known as Bright Mark, by a cop in February 2018, the family is demanding N100m as compensation from the Nigeria Police.
Also, the family demanded the prosecution of the police officer that allegedly shot its breadwinner at the popular Rumuokoro Roundabout in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers State.
Brother of the victim, Akachi Mark, during Monday’s sitting at the Rivers State Judicial Commission of Inquiry on Police brutality in Port Harcourt said the 31-year-old was allegedly killed on February 18, 2018, inside his taxi, during a gridlock at the Rumuokoro Roundabout.
“We want justice; justice in the sense that the Police officer who killed our brother and breadwinner should be brought to book. When the former Commissioner of Police, Zaki, visited our family, he promised to bring the trigger-happy policeman to book.
“But, nothing has happened till date. We also want financial compensation to the tune of N100 million because Bright was the family’s breadwinner. Today, his wife who was only four months pregnant when he was killed, his daughter, and our mother, are languishing in hunger in the village,” Akachi stated.
Meanwhile, counsel for the Commissioner of Police, Mrs. Mercy Nweke, queried that the petitioner did not mention any police officer and sought for an adjournment to enable the Police legal team to visit the Rumuokoro Special Area Division, where the incident allegedly occurred.
“There was no name of any police officer mentioned in the petition. So, we need to visit the Special Area, Rumuokoro, to find out more facts. We are, therefore, seeking an adjournment of hearing on this matter,” Barr. Nweke added.
The Commission’s Chairman, Hon. Justice Chukwunenye Uriri (retd.), agreed with the counsel and adjourned the hearing on the matter to Wednesday, December 2, 2020, even as he advised the Police legal team to ensure that they appear on the adjourned date with their witnesses.
