Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf has called for action regarding the detention of minors from Kano who were among protesters arraigned at the Federal High Court in Abuja.

The protesters, arrested during the recent #EndBadGovernance protests, included several minors who appeared visibly malnourished in a video that circulated online.

The governor directed the state’s Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice to work on releasing the minors.

This information was confirmed by the Kano State Commissioner for Information, Baba Halilu Dantiye, who told The Punch on Sunday, “The Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf, has instructed the state’s Commissioner for Justice to act on the development.”

Governor Yusuf had initially addressed the issue on his X (formerly Twitter) handle after the video of the arraignment spread online. In his message, he said, “My attention has been drawn to the appearance of teenagers (some believed to be from Kano) in court today (Friday) in Abuja. The Commissioner of Justice has been instructed to act immediately on the issue. We shall do everything possible to get them back to Kano, insha Allah.”

On Friday, 76 protesters were arraigned by the Inspector-General of Police, Olukayode Egbetokun, on charges including treason and inciting the military to remove President Bola Tinubu. All defendants, including the minors, pleaded not guilty to the charges.
