Luis Rubiales, the suspended president of the Spanish Football Federation, has announced his resignation from his position.
“I’m going to (resign), yes, because I cannot continue my work,” said Rubiales in an interview with television show “Piers Morgan Uncensored”
The decision comes after Rubiales was accused of sexual assault by Spain Women’s World Cup midfielder Jenni Hermoso.
Rubiales was accused of forcibly kissing Hermoso during the medal ceremony after Spain’s victory in Sydney.
He has denied the allegations, but he has been suspended by FIFA for 90 days.
Hermoso has filed a formal complaint with the Spanish public prosecutor’s office. She is also seeking damages from Rubiales.
In a letter to the RFEF, Rubiales said that he was resigning because he could not continue his work under the current circumstances.
He said that he was confident that the truth would come out and that he would be cleared of the charges.
“I have faith in the truth and I will do everything in my power so that it prevails,” Rubiales said.
