Tech billionaire Elon Musk has announced the launch of a new political group, the America Party, saying it will stand against the two major parties in the United States.

The Tesla and SpaceX boss made the announcement on Saturday through his social media platform, X. He said Americans had asked for a new political option and that the America Party would be their answer.

“By a factor of 2 to 1, you want a new political party and you shall have it!” Musk wrote. “Today, the America Party is formed to give you back your freedom.”

His move comes weeks after a public fight with former US President Donald Trump, who he had once strongly supported. Musk had joined Trump’s government after last year’s election and was appointed to lead a department focused on reducing government spending. But things turned sour after Musk criticised Trump’s tax and spending plans.

That plan, which Trump described as his “big, beautiful bill,” was signed into law earlier this week. It includes large spending promises and tax cuts, which critics say will increase America’s debt by over \$3 trillion in ten years.

One issue that seems to have angered Musk is the bill’s lack of support for green energy. Tesla, which Musk owns, is a leader in electric vehicles and depends on certain government policies to grow.

In response, Trump posted on his platform Truth Social: “Elon may get more subsidy than any human being in history, by far. Without subsidies, Elon would probably have to close up shop and head back home to South Africa.”

Trump also threatened to have the Department of Government Efficiency investigate government funding that benefits Musk’s companies, including SpaceX and Starlink.

Though Musk cannot run for US president because he was born outside the country, he has not yet said who will lead the America Party.

So far, no paperwork has been made public to confirm that the party is officially registered with the US election body. Still, Musk’s announcement has already gained wide attention online.
