A 28-year-old electrician has died after being electrocuted while trying to fix a fault on a high-tension cable in Eruwa, Ibarapa Local Government Area of Oyo State.
The incident happened on Wednesday, April 23, 2025, in the Odi Babaode area of the town.
The General Manager of the Oyo State Fire Service, Yemi Akinyinka, confirmed the sad event. He explained that the young man was working on a live 33KV power line belonging to the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company when the accident occurred.
“The incident happened while the electrician was trying to fix an electrical fault on the active power lines without turning off the feeder,” Akinyinka said.
He added that the fire service received a distress call at exactly 3:29 pm from a resident, Adelanre Adeyinka. A rescue team led by Peluola Babatunde was sent to the scene, but the victim had already died before they arrived.
“The victim had already been electrocuted before our men got there,” Akinyinka said. “His body was later handed over to policemen from Eruwa Police Station.”
The fire service boss warned members of the public to avoid working on electrical equipment unless they are fully trained and certified to do so.
“Life has no duplicate,” Akinyinka stressed. “Only trained engineers or technicians should handle live electrical installations.”
