Ekiti doctors sweep 31 medals to win NMA South West biennial games
Ekiti has been declared the overall winner of the 3rd edition of NMA South West biennial games where 150 physicians from Ogun, Oyo, Osun, Ondo and the host state jostled for laurels at the Afe Babalola University Sports Complex in Ado Ekiti.
At the end of the keenly contested sporting events which included athletics, football, volleyball, badminton, golf, chess, Ayo Olopon, scrabble, and tennis, Ekiti doctors cleaned out 31 medals followed by Ogun and Oyo with 10 and eight respectively.
The previous two editions of the zonal bienniel games were hosted by Ogun and Oyo State chapters.
Speaking on the successful hosting of the two-day sporting activities, South NMA Caucus Secretary, Dr Bolaji Lateef Salako, disclosed that he was impressed with the high level of maturity and spirit of sportsmanship exhibited by the participants.
“The games also served as an avenue to select our bests that will represent the Zone at National Games in Abuja in February 2022,” he said.
He also applauded NMA South-West Zone Chairman, Dr Ogunlaja Oladayo and his Ekiti counterpart, Dr Kayode Ariyibi.
The caucus secretary expressed their profound gratitude to the management of Afe Babalola University Ado Ekiti for the support extended to the association while the games lasted.
His view was shared by Coordinator of the zonal games, Dr Moruf Yusuf.
“Medical doctors’ participation in sport is to outwardly express what we preach, to keep fit and stay healthy by engaging in exercise and relaxing interactions beyond the corners of the hospital.
“There is no gainsaying the fact that staging sporting events and bringing athletes together is capital intensive. NMA games have come to stay and it is high time we began to think outside the box.
“For instance, we need to adopt the novel approach of Ekiti State to solve our funding challenge by creating a Trust Fund with benefits and investments from multiple sources,” he said.
