Ekiti court grants herdsman N800,000 bail after destroying farm produce

The Ekiti State Police Command has arraigned a 20-year-old cattle rearer, Mohamadu Bello, in an Ado Ekiti Chief Magistrate’s Court for allegedly destroying farm produce valued at N3.8 million, belonging to four different individuals.

The police prosecutor, Inspector Elijah Adejare, informed the court on Thursday that the defendant committed the offence on August 10 at Ido Ile Ekiti.

Adejare explained, “The defendant, who is a cattle rearer, maliciously damaged farm produce valued at N300,000 belonging to one Awiye Olusola. The defendant also maliciously damaged farm produce valued at N2.8 million belonging to one Oni Samson.”

He further added, “The defendant maliciously damaged farm produce valued at N300,000 belonging to one Igbalajobi Adeyomi. The defendant also maliciously damaged farm produce valued at N400,000 belonging to one Akinola Sunday.”

According to Adejare, the offences committed by the defendant violated Section 363 of the Criminal Law of Ekiti State, 2021. He then requested the court to grant an adjournment to allow him to study the case file and present his witnesses.

The counsel for the defendant, Mr. Adeyemi Egbebi, appealed to the court to grant the defendant bail, assuring the court that his client would not jump bail.

The Chief Magistrate, Mr. Bankole Oluwasanmi, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N80,000 with one surety in like sum. The case was then adjourned until September 6 for hearing.
