Dr. Sikiru Tae Lawal Ekiti Bye-election Violence

Former deputy governor of Ekiti State, Dr. Sikiru Tae Lawal, has expressed sadness over the violence that disrupted the Ekiti East Constituency 1 House of Assembly bye-election on Saturday.
WuzupNigeria reported that no fewer than three people lost their lives while others, including a corps member, sustained injuries when thugs invaded the state Assembly poll with guns.

Reacting to the event while addressing newsmen on Sunday, Lawal decried the outcome of the election, labelling it a big shame on Ekiti and Nigeria as a whole.

The former deputy governor noted that It was unfortunate that some politicians were still living in the stone age because they believed that they cannot win any election without engaging in violence.

The Sun reports that Lawal, a governorship aspirant in the Ekiti 2022 race, expressed worry over a repeat of violence during next year’s gubernatorial election.

He noted that if mayhem could be unleashed in a mere state constituency bye-election, only God knows what is in the pipeline for the 2022 governorship election in the state.

He commiserated with the families of the deceased and wished those who were injured quick recovery while urging the police to bring the perpetrators of the mayhem to book without delay.

WuzupNigeria, in a follow-up report, revealed that the Independent National Electoral Commission suspended the bye-elections indefinitely as a result of the melee.

“The situation is unacceptable. In its avowed commitment to electoral integrity, the commission has suspended the election indefinitely. To continue with the process will amount to rewarding bad behaviour. The security agencies are aware of this unfortunate situation and have commenced investigation,” INEC said.
