Ekiti 2022: PDP needs competent candidate to defeat APC, says Oni

A former Governor of Ekiti State, Chief Segun Oni, on Tuesday, said the state chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party, could not afford the luxury of zoning its governorship ticket for the 2022 race.

He said what the party needed was a candidate who could win elections and defeat the All Progressives Congress candidate.

Oni said zoning of the governorship position to a district at a time serious effort was needed to dislodge the governing APC from the Government would be a disservice to the party.

The former governor, who is an aspirant for the 2022 governorship in the state, said during a chat with journalists in Ado Ekiti that “only a ruling party can zone governorship. But if you are in opposition, you should only think of who can take power”.

He spoke against the backdrop of agitations by some people in the South Senatorial District that the governorship should be zoned to their area which has not produced the governor since the creation of the state in 1996.

Oni said, “Let me thank Mr Ayodele Fayose, he had the luxury as a governor and he went for it, though we lost in 2018. Governor Kayode Fayemi, who is in power, is the only one that can answer the zoning call now because he is in government. The PDP should think of who can win the election”.

The former governor, who said Ekiti people were already disillusioned with the APC government, which he described as an abysmal failure, said that the PDP had a high possibility of winning the next election in Ekiti.

Oni said, “Ekiti voters are ready to vote for us. No party can be luckier than this. Our road to the Government House is almost clear, people have been saying that to us. Though we have internal crises, we will resolve our differences, because we don’t want to play second fiddle again.”
