The Eko Electricity Distribution Company is taking a firm stand against vandalism, illegal connections, and energy theft within its franchise area, pledging to utilize the full extent of the law to combat these illicit activities.
In a statement signed by the general manager of Corporate Communications at EKEDC, Babatunde Lasaki, the company urged the public to support its efforts in the fight against vandalism of electricity installations.
Lasaki disclosed, “We have had several cases this year bordering on vandalism, reckless driving, and illegal reconnection across our network.”
He emphasized the company’s commitment to prosecuting offenders, citing examples of recent legal actions taken against vandals.
“For example, one Arisu Umar was sentenced to three months, six months, and another six months to run concurrently from the date of remand for stealing and willful damage to our equipment in Ojo. Also, another man, Gesiakimi Paka was sentenced to a two-year jail term for conspiracy and attempt to steal,” Lasaki explained.
Highlighting the impact of such activities on service delivery, Lasaki noted, “These illegal activities and other factors contribute to service downtime and the Company’s inability to provide stable power supply to its customers.”
He assured customers of EKEDC’s unwavering commitment to delivering safe, reliable, and continuous electricity supply.
Commending customers, communities, and security agencies for their role in securing electricity installations, Lasaki called for more concerted efforts to prevent future vandalism or theft.
He issued a stern warning to perpetrators, stating, “We are also using this as a medium to warn perpetrators of this preposterous act of vandalism, energy theft, and other illegal activities to refrain from doing that or face the full extent of the law as our legal team is poised to ensure the prosecution of these perpetrators.”
Lasaki concluded by expressing gratitude to customers for their understanding and continuous support, urging them to reach out to EKEDC through various touchpoints for prompt resolution of any complaints.
