Eight construction workers have been rescued from the rubble of a collapsed four-storey building at 333 Borno Way, Alagomeji, Ebute-Metta, Lagos.

The structure, which was still under construction, caved in around 8 pm on Friday, sparking panic as residents fled the area.

Emergency teams worked through the night, pulling all eight trapped men — identified as adult construction workers — from the debris by 5 am on Saturday. They were rushed to the hospital and are said to be receiving treatment.

Deputy Controller General of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Olajide Ogabi, confirmed the update. “All reported eight trapped victims have been rescued alive as at 5 am on Saturday and are presently receiving treatment in the hospital, as search and rescue reached ground zero while evacuation of rubble continued,” he said.

Ogabi also assured residents that all agencies, including the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), and the police, were fully involved in the operation.

Meanwhile, concerns over a gas odour that spread across Ikeja on Friday evening were addressed by authorities. Ogabi explained that it was caused by a controlled release of gaseous particles during routine maintenance by Axxela Group, the parent company of Gaslink.

“The effect has been neutralized, eliminating possible danger. Crews of Fire and Rescue are on standby patrol of the axis on safety precautions,” Ogabi said, urging Lagosians to remain calm.

He assured the public that there was no active gas leak and encouraged residents to continue their normal activities, noting that the odour would fade gradually.
