A multiple-vehicle crash involving several trucks and a container-laden trailer caused heavy gridlock and a fire outbreak on the Kara Bridge section of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway on Thursday.

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority confirmed the incident in a post on its official X handle, saying eight people were injured.

According to the agency, the crash involved a truck and a container trailer that went up in flames, another truck that spilled cartons of biscuits across the road, and a separate container truck that rammed into the bridge barrier, sending its container into the river.

“Eight casualties were recorded, and emergency responders are working to recover and evacuate the vehicles involved,” LASTMA said.

The crash led to massive traffic congestion stretching from Kara Bridge to Ogunnusi Road, as both lanes were blocked.

“Traffic backlog on Ogunnusi Road, Lagos-Ibadan Expressway. Officers and other emergency first responders are on ground,” the agency added.

Police officers, Federal Road Safety Corps personnel, and emergency teams were deployed to the scene.

LASTMA said a high-capacity tow truck and a SEMA ambulance were already at the site, while a crane was expected to help remove the damaged and burnt vehicles.

Motorists were advised to exercise patience and consider alternative routes while rescue and clearance operations continued.
