JUST IN: Eguavoen reigns as NFF fires Super Eagles technical crew

Nigerian football legend, Augustine Eguavoen, has stepped down from his role as the “technical adviser” of Super Eagles.

The is just as the Nigeria Football Federation announced that it has also sacked the technical crew of the Super Eagles which consists of the likes of Joseph Yobo and Emmanuel Amunike.

Eguavoen’s resignation was confrimed in a statement released by the on Thursday morning.

This comes after the Eagles failed to qualify for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar after a 1-1 draw against Ghana at the MKO Abiola Stadium in Abuja on Tuesday.

Prior to his resignation, Eguavoen held the post of the Super Eagles’ technical director/ technical adviser.

Ghana beat Eguavoen’s side to the World Cup ticket on away goals after playing a goalless draw last Friday at the Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi.

Eguavoen came on board as an interim coach(technical directo/adviser) following the sack of Gernot Rohr led the Super Eagles to the Round of 16 at the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon.

Prior to his resignation, Eguavoen held the post of the Super Eagles’ technical director/ technical adviser.

A 1-0 defeat saw the star-studded Super Eagles side crash out to a depleted Carthage Eagles squad.

The NFF statement read: “Following the failure of the Super Eagles of Nigeria to qualify for the 2022 FIFA World Cup, the erstwhile Technical Adviser, Augustine Eguavoen has stepped down from that position with immediate effect.”

The football body added that it “has in the meantime withdrawn the two-and-half years contract offered the coaches and terminated the appointment of the entire technical crew of the team with immediate effect.

“A new crew will be announced after a proper review to lead the new charge of reinvigorating the Super Eagles to face future challenges appropriately.”

“We thank the coaches and team officials for their service to the nation and wish them success in their future endeavours,” said.
