EFL clubs will be able to make up to five substitutions from Friday

The five substitutions per match system will be used on Friday in the Sky Bet Championship game between Coventry and Birmingham after EFL clubs voted in favour of its reintroduction.

The five subs system was replaced with the three subs system when Premier League clubs voted against its use for the 2020/21 season in August.

Recall the five subs system was first introduced across major leagues due to towards the end of the last term after the coronavirus pandemic truncated the length of the 2019/20 campaign.

While major league across Europe, including the Champions League, continued with the system in the 2020/21 football season league in England reverted to three substations per match.

As it stands, the Premier League is the only league still using the three subs system and reports doubt that they will reintroduce the five subs system this season, despite calls from half of its clubs, including Liverpool and Manchester City.
