The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has said it will question former Niger Delta militant leader, Chief Government Ekpemupolo, also known as Tompolo, for allegedly abusing the naira.

In a post shared on Monday, May 12, 2025, through its official X (formerly Twitter) handle, the anti-graft agency stated: “Nobody is above the law. Tompolo will have questions to answer!” The message included a photo from a recent event showing the alleged naira abuse.

The issue began after a video was posted on social media showing Tompolo dancing while a man sprayed ₦1,000 notes in front of him. The clip was said to have been taken during Tompolo’s 54th birthday celebration in April.

The video quickly went viral, with many Nigerians accusing the EFCC of applying the law unfairly.

One user, Najeeb Bello, wrote: “Once e reach their Oga and him friends, ‘Eee Eff See See’ go turn ‘Eee Eff Blind Blind’. No be just Tompolo, but what of these Folawiyo Eleganza sons wey record and publish video of themselves dey abuse Naira?”

Another user, OurFavOnlineDoc, said: “Here is Tompolo mutilating the Naira. I know the eyes of that your eagle will suddenly go blind, but I am bringing this to your attention publicly so the whole world will see you are a shameless agency with double standards.”

Meek Raphael also posted: “Okoya’s son is still walking freely and you expect them to go for Tompolo? Their laws are only effective when the offender is not from the rich class. Same with every security agency in Nigeria — none is truly for the masses.”

In recent weeks, the EFCC has questioned other celebrities over similar issues. Nollywood actress Iyabo Ojo and comedian Ayo Makun were both invited for allegedly spraying money at public events.

Also, Lagos socialite Emeka Okonkwo, known as E-Money, was previously arrested for spraying foreign currencies.

The EFCC has reminded the public that spraying or stepping on the naira is against the law, and anyone found guilty will face consequences, no matter their status.
