The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission is conducting a criminal investigation into the controversial Nigeria Air deal involving the former Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Hadi Sirika.
The current Minister, Festus Keyamo, disclosed this information, emphasizing the need for a thorough examination of the matter.
Keyamo stated, “The EFCC is investigating that deal. There is a criminal investigation going on. I have called for the report.”
He further clarified that no local airline would be designated as a national carrier, asserting that they intend to establish a proper national carrier.
This investigation comes after Keyamo, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, expressed concerns about the Nigeria Air deal shortly after assuming office in August.
He suspended the entire arrangement to facilitate a comprehensive audit of contracts related to the project.
The Nigeria Air project was unveiled in the final days of the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari.
The controversy surrounding the establishment of the national carrier led to the resignation of Girma Wake, the Chairman of Ethiopian Airlines, who was involved in the initiative.
Then Interim Managing Director of Nigeria Air, Capt. Dapo Olumide clarified that the aircraft used for the unveiling was legitimately chartered from Ethiopian Airlines and was returned after the ceremony.
However, both the Senate and House of Representatives Committees on Aviation labeled the Nigeria Air launch as a fraud.
