Officials of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission on Saturday clashed with voters at Ndabagi Polling Unit 011, North Bank,  Makurdi,  the Benue State capital.

The governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Mr Emmanuel Jime voted at the polling unit.

The EFCC’s operative apparently acting on a tip-off, had stormed the polling unit as Jime,  who had voted, was granting interviews with journalists.

Eyewitnesses said the anti-graft operatives moved straight to a parked sports utility vehicle said to belong to a prominent politician in the state. They were said to have ordered the driver of the SUV to open the boot of the car.  It was learnt that the driver was reluctant to open the boot,  causing the operatives to forcibly make him to open it.

The operatives were said to have discovered a big bag in the boot, later opened it and were said to have discovered wads of crisp naira notes.

It was learnt that attempts by the EFCC operatives to seize the bag and the money was stoutly resisted by the voters who were mainly young people. They, however, took a shot of the bag and money.

EFCC in a tweet later confirmed the development.

It tweeted, “Polls At North Bank Area, Makurdi, Benue State, EFCC operatives intercept bags of cash meant for vote-buying. In an attempt to arrest the culprit, some thugs attacked operatives and vandalised the bus used for patrol.”
