The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission Maiduguri Zonal Command, in a decisive move, apprehended 21 trucks carrying concealed food and non-food items destined for neighboring countries.

EFCC’s Head of Media and Publicity, Mr. Dele Oyewale, announced on Tuesday that the operation successfully intercepted the trucks along major exit routes on Kalabiri/Gamboru Ngala and Bama roads in Borno State.

“Investigations showed that the foodstuffs were cleverly concealed in the trucks that would have gone undetected, but for the eagle-eyed vigilance of the EFCC operatives,” Oyewale stated.

The Waybills accompanying the goods revealed their intended destinations as N’djamena, Chad Republic, Central Africa Republic, and Cameroon respectively.

“The arrest of the trucks is expected to stem the tide of food insecurity occasioned by unscrupulous antics of smugglers across the country,” Oyewale emphasized.

The EFCC’s spokesperson further confirmed that individuals linked to the smuggling operation are currently undergoing profiling. Culprits will face prosecution once investigations are concluded.

“Suspects arrested with the trucks are being profiled and would be charged to court as soon as investigations are concluded,” Oyewale concluded.
