The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has arrested popular Kano TikTok influencer, Murja Kunya, for allegedly abusing the Nigerian currency.

The anti-graft agency’s spokesperson, Dele Oyewale, confirmed the arrest in a statement on Monday.

According to the EFCC, Kunya was taken into custody after she was seen spraying Naira notes for fun while staying at Tahir Guest Palace in Kano.

The commission added that the TikToker had earlier been granted administrative bail in February after her first arrest in January 2025. However, she failed to appear in court when she was scheduled for arraignment.

The EFCC stated that after weeks of investigation and surveillance, its operatives successfully rearrested Kunya on Sunday, March 16, 2025.

“She (Kunya) was initially arrested in January 2025 for violating the Central Bank of Nigeria Act, which prohibits the abuse and mutilation of the Naira. She was granted an administrative bail by the Commission pending her arraignment before the Federal High Court in Kano. However, when it was time for her court appearance, Kunya absconded, evading the legal process,” the statement read.

The EFCC added, “After weeks of intensive investigation and surveillance, EFCC operatives successfully rearrested the TikTok influencer on Sunday, March 16, 2025. She is currently in custody at the Kano Zonal Directorate of the Commission, awaiting her arraignment.”

The commission also warned Nigerians to desist from acts of Naira abuse, including spraying, stamping, or mutilating the currency during social events. It reaffirmed its commitment to enforcing laws that protect the integrity of the Nigerian currency.
