CBN stops cheque clearing in Abuja, Lagos, Ogun

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has arrested the former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Godwin Emefiele. This arrest came just hours after his release from the custody of the Department of State Services on Thursday night.

Emefiele, who was previously in the custody of the DSS, is currently being interrogated at the National Headquarters of the EFCC in Jabi, Abuja.

The reason behind this new development is the EFCC’s ongoing investigation into allegations of impropriety during his tenure as the head of the apex bank.

An inside source revealed, “Yes, Emefiele is currently in our (EFCC) custody; he was arrested last night less than an hour after the DSS freed him. He’s currently being interrogated at the Headquarters, as he’s being investigated for alleged misappropriation of funds amongst other things during his term as CBN governor.”

It’s worth noting that Emefiele was initially arrested by the DSS back in June on the same day President Bola Tinubu suspended him from his position as the CBN governor.

The Presidency cited the reasons for his suspension as “ongoing investigation of his office and the planned reforms in the financial sector of the economy.”
