The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has arrested 35 people suspected of internet fraud in Auchi, Edo State.

According to a post on the agency’s official Twitter page on Tuesday, May 6, the suspects were picked up in different areas of the town, including Vigilante Street, off Sabo Ibenafo Road, and the Back of Yak axis.

The EFCC said the arrests followed “credible intelligence that linked the suspects to fraudulent internet activities.”

The commission also said it is committed to fighting internet fraud across the country. “We remain resolute in our mandate to rid Nigeria of economic and financial crimes,” the agency stated.

During the operation, officers recovered several items believed to have been used for illegal activities. These included nine cars, eleven laptop computers, 46 mobile phones, and two smart watches.

The suspects are now in EFCC custody and are being questioned. The agency confirmed that they would be charged to court once investigations are complete.

This latest arrest adds to the EFCC’s ongoing efforts to stop online scams, commonly known as “Yahoo Yahoo,” especially in areas like Auchi which have become known for such activities.

The EFCC also urged the public to report any suspicious behaviour and support the fight against financial crime.
