Residents of Enwan Community in Edo State have raised concerns over a possible disaster after heavy rainfall caused the Ojirami dam to overflow.
According to The PUNCH, floodwater swept through parts of the community in Akoko-Edo Local Government Area, damaging homes and businesses.
The flooding also prevented students from attending school and disrupted farming activities.
Poultry farmer loses 1,400 birds
Poultry farmer Monday John said the flood destroyed his livelihood after water swept through his property.
“The flood took over everywhere and killed 1,400 of my birds,” John said.
He appealed to authorities to improve the management of water released from the dam.
Another resident, John Omaze, said floodwater destroyed his palm oil mill.
“Flood destroyed my palm oil mill. Our children could not go to school, and many people did not go to the farm,” he said.
Residents fear dam collapse
Residents said they were particularly concerned about what could happen if the dam itself fails.
“The government must take action now,” a resident identified as Ehis said.
“If the dam collapses, the effect might be far-reaching as communities will be submerged.”
The flooding followed rainfall that reportedly began around 6am and quickly overwhelmed roads and buildings.
Residents are now calling for urgent government intervention before another heavy rainfall worsens the situation.
