Edo polls: Shaibu declares interest for office

Published

Edo State Deputy Governor, Philip Shaibu, has thrown his hat into the ring for the governorship position, directly challenging his boss, Governor Godwin Obaseki.

Daily post reported that Shaibu, who has been at odds with Obaseki for some time, made his announcement during a press conference in Benin City.

Shaibu, who was recently evicted from the Deputy Governor’s Lodge, explained his decision to run, stating, “Edo needs a practical leader.”

He criticized Obaseki’s leadership, suggesting that the governor has been experimenting during his nearly eight years in office.

With the 2024 Edo governorship election fast approaching, the state cannot afford to experiment again with someone who does not understand the politics of the state or the needs of the people,” Shaibu declared.

He emphasized the importance of competence and experience, questioning the need for further experimentation. “Who is competent? Who is more experienced? Who will hit the ground running from day one?” Shaibu asked.

Shaibu expressed concerns about the potential for a new governor to spend their first four years learning the job and the next four years focusing on personal gain rather than the state’s progress. Instead, he advocated for a governor who could immediately begin addressing the needs of the people.
