The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps in Edo State has denied claims that its officers were involved in the death of a Bolt driver in Benin City.

Speaking to journalists on Friday, the spokesperson for the NSCDC in Edo, Efosa Egbebor, said their officers were only assisting the police with investigations.

“Our officers did not kill anyone. The case is with the police, and we cannot be the judge in our own case,” Egbebor stated.

This comes after the Edo State Police Command announced the arrest of four NSCDC officers following protests by Bolt drivers on Thursday, who were demanding justice over the driver’s death.

Egbebor explained that the incident began with a heated argument between the Bolt driver and a customer at a hotel, which later turned into a physical fight.

“The driver was reportedly beaten by the customer and his friends. Sadly, he later died,” he said.

According to Egbebor, NSCDC officers stationed at the hotel only intervened to restore peace and did not harm the driver.

“Our officers helped calm the situation. They were not involved in the fight. We have also sent them to the police to provide any information needed for the investigation,” he added.

Egbebor dismissed reports that NSCDC officers were arrested, saying they voluntarily presented themselves to the police to support the investigation.

He stressed that the NSCDC does not tolerate any form of misconduct.

“After the investigation, the truth will come out. We will not protect anyone involved in illegal activities. Whoever is found guilty will face the full weight of the law,” Egbebor assured.
