The former President of the Nigeria Bar Association and governorship candidate under the Labour Party in Edo State, Barr Olumide Akpata, has refuted any connection to the violent protest that occurred at the state secretariat of the party in Benin City on Sunday, February 4, 2024.

Akpata dismissed insinuations linking him or his supporters to the protest as an attempt to tarnish his reputation. He emphasized his unwavering commitment to a lawful and peaceful pursuit of his gubernatorial ambition, underscoring principles of tolerance and justice.

Addressing reporters at a press conference, Akpata stated, “I want to clearly and unequivocally state that I have absolutely no knowledge of this protest, nor have I sanctioned or approved it in any way.”

He condemned rumors and insinuations suggesting his involvement, labeling them as false and ridiculous. Akpata highlighted his loyalty to the LP and his efforts in strengthening the party across Edo State.

Akpata asserted, “It is very likely that these bogus allegations and rumors are emanating from certain quarters within and even outside the Labour Party that are opposed to my emerging as the Labour Party’s gubernatorial flag bearer.”

He emphasized his commitment to non-violence and urged adherence to peaceful and legal means of expression. Akpata encouraged reporting any unlawful behavior to the appropriate authorities for investigation and possible prosecution.

Responding to allegations of being a spy for Governor Obaseki in the LP, Akpata dismissed such claims as attempts to undermine his candidacy. He criticized Obaseki’s administration and the PDP’s governance in Edo State, positioning himself as a viable alternative.

Akpata expressed confidence in the LP’s ability to conduct free and fair primaries and affirmed his dedication to the party’s principles. He reiterated his commitment to serving the people of Edo State, regardless of the outcome of his gubernatorial aspiration.
