The Edo State Government has successfully completed the recruitment of 5,500 teachers to enhance teaching and learning in the state’s basic schools.
Chair of the Edo State Universal Basic Education Board, Mrs. Ozavize Salami, made this announcement during a press conference on Friday in Benin.
She emphasized that this recruitment is part of the government’s strategy to address the shortage of teachers in primary and junior secondary schools.
Salami explained, “The recruitment process was rigorous, with 19,931 applications received and 16,038 selected for computer-based tests and interviews.” She added that candidates were chosen based on their skills and expertise, which are relevant to filling gaps in the school system across all local government areas.
“The newly recruited teachers will undergo training and capacity building to ensure they are equipped to deliver high-quality education,” Salami said.
Highlighting the commitment of Governor Godwin Obaseki to education reform, Salami noted that the EdoBEST initiative has positioned Edo State as a leader in Nigeria’s education sector, focusing on improving learning outcomes for approximately 400,000 children. “This recruitment exercise of 5,500 teachers is a significant step towards achieving this goal,” she added.
Salami also mentioned that 1,780 EdoSTAR fellows, who were initially engaged as trainee teachers two years ago, have now been recruited as full-time government teachers. She described the exercise as a demonstration of the state government’s commitment to investing in its teachers and providing opportunities for their growth and development.
“The newly recruited teachers have been deployed to schools across the state based on the observed gaps, to ensure every child has access to high-quality education,” Salami stated.
Expressing her excitement, she said, “We are confident this recruitment will have a positive impact on teaching and learning in our primary schools.”
