The Edo State Government, in collaboration with the Benin Electricity Distribution Company has announced plans to meter approximately 500,000 homes across the state. The initiative, aimed at addressing the longstanding issue of estimated billing, is set to commence on August 13.

According to the PUNCH, the Commissioner for Mining, Energy, Oil and GasEnaholo Ojiefo, disclosed this development on Saturday, following the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding with BEDC officials.

The project, which will span the state’s three senatorial districts, is part of a broader effort to ensure more accurate billing and improve electricity distribution.

Ojiefo explained that each household will be fitted with government-subsidized meters, which are covered by an insurance policy. Residents are expected to receive their meters within 10 days of payment. The payment portal will be open for subscribers starting from August 14, and the government assures that the meters will be delivered promptly.

“I can confirm that the Edo State Government, in partnership with the Benin Electricity Distribution Company, will distribute meters to around 500,000 homes in the state,” said Ojiefo.

“This exercise, beginning on August 13, will help eliminate the issue of estimated billing, with coverage across all three senatorial districts.”

The signing ceremony was attended by Kings Akuma, Chairman of the BEDC Board of Directors, and Deolu Ijose, Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of BEDC, who both represented the electricity distribution company.
